Digital Radio Reception Via Cable

With the analogue switch-off of TV programmes, the distribution of FM programmes also ended in Vodafone’s cable network. The cable network operator needs the frequencies for the DOCSIS 3.1 standard, which is supposed to bring fast internet to households. Digital radio reception via cable is the alternative – but how do you convert your stereo system for this?

Digital Radio Reception Via Cable

Cable Adapter

An inexpensive alternative is an adapter that is connected to the cable socket with a coaxial cable and thus receives the digital radio signals (DVB-C). The device processes the signals and transfers them to the analogue or optical digital audio outputs. By means of an audio cable, the adapter is connected to the stereo system and plays the digital radio programmes via cable.

The station change is then no longer done on the hi-fi system, but via the adapter. On the other hand, the radio offer is much more extensive than via the analogue reception path.

Via the receiver

If you only listen to the radio infrequently, you can also receive the radio programmes broadcast on the cable network via the TV receiver. With the GigaTV 4K Box, you can open the electronic programme guide (EPG) of the radio programmes “TV Guide > Filter Radio Stations > All Stations” and get an overview of the current radio programme.

With most receivers, the radio programmes are located at the end of the channel list, e.g. from channel position 800. Some receivers have a special radio mode which can be activated with the corresponding radio key on the remote control.

Digital radio reception via Unitymedia cable

In the Horizon receiver from Unitymedia, the programmes of the radio programmes are displayed in the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).

DAB+ in the cable network

Some German cable network operators, such as the Munich network operator M-net, transmit the DAB+ radio standard in the cable network. In the Munich cable network of M-net, a multiplex with a programme mix of 16 nationwide and regional DAB+ channels is being played out with immediate effect: This bouquet includes the eleven public channels Bayern 1 (Upper Bavaria), Bayern 2 (North and South), Bayern 3, B5 aktuell, B5 plus, Bayern plus, BR Heimat, BR-Klassik, BR Verkehr and PULS as well as the five private channels Antenne Bayern, Absolut HOT, egoFM, Radio TEDDY and Rock Antenne.
